President at UN: World must confront annoying telemarketing calls

September 25, 2003

New York — President George W. Bush said on Tuesday that the United Nations must make the fight against annoying telemarketers a top priority and that only a global effort will lessen the number of dinnertime calls.

“Far too often, innocent people trying to enjoy their dinner are interrupted by a sales pitch for cheaper long-distance service or carpet cleaning. These people need our help, and all nations of goodwill should step forward and provide support,” he said in remarks to the UN General Assembly.

“These permanent commitments call us to great work in the world — work we must do together. So let us move forward,” President Bush said.

The fight against telemarketers is the cornerstone of the Bush administration, but the President will unveil new programs this month aimed at curbing excessive ATM fees, lengthy waits at DMV offices, and the number of commercials during NFL broadcasts.
